A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped after the blast was apprehended not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the property was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
