Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
